Will there be a public revolt if Margaret Beckett is 'elected' Speaker of the House of Commons?

As I understand it, one of the functions of the next Speaker will be to rule on whether MP's can elect the various Chairmen of the Select Committees, or whether they should, as now, be government appointees. All candidates for the Speakership except Mrs Beckett are in favour of the reform which would benefit the Country. Mrs Beckett is in favour of the status quo. The whips want the Chairmanships to be, as now, within the gift of the government and need a lackey as Speaker. We are becoming a dictatorship even more.
