Where is a good family community in the D.C. area?

I'm moving my family from Anaheim, CA to a job in the heart of D.C.. Can someone from around there recommend a nice, affordable, family community that's within commuting range? Should I look in Virginia or Maryland? I understand that there is a great metro system in D.C., and I'd like to utilize that if possible. Any advice?
